Spiritual Gifts

Have you ever come into a movie halfway or so and had so many questions?
That’s similar to our perspective of spiritual gifts in the NT church.
We may not get adequate answers to our questions, especially from one text.
But that should not eliminate the basic understanding and application.

Practical Application

Of offering yourself (v.1)
And, Renewing your mind (v. 2)
It is clear that is in in the context of relating to one another as believers.
How are we to think? (v. 3)
How are we the same? (vv. 4-5)
How are we different? (vv. 6-8)

How are we to think? (v. 3)

Or yourself
Not highly - haughty estimation
Sober judgment - sound mind, reasonable, sensible
Measure of faith…assigned
Quantity, portion
Dealt out, distributed, divided up
In connection with your faith
This is clarified in the rest of the text.

How are we the same? (vv. 4-5)

This is an illustration of diversity within unity.
We are all different like parts of a body. No of us are the whole. Everyone of us is just a part.
We are all equal members of the body. This is true universally, but here, locally (more practical).
This gives us further insight - we are here for each other.
Ephesians 4:16 “from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
1 Corinthians 12:7 “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
1 Corinthians 12:25 “that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.”
Hebrews 10:24–25 “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

How are we different? (vv. 6-8)

Different gifts (“SPIRITUAL GIFTS Ministries or abilities that the Holy Spirit gives to Christians for the edification of the Church.” Christopher Zoccali, “Spiritual Gifts,” ed. John D. Barry et al., The Lexham Bible Dictionary (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2016).
These gifts were being manifested in the assembling together of believers (“Two of the gifts Paul mentions in these verses—prophecy and teaching—are also found in other lists of gifts in Paul. The gifts in v. 8, however, have no linguistic equivalent in the other lists, although the ministries they denote could well correspond to, or overlap with, some of the gifts listed elsewhere. These texts suggest that Paul, and presumably the early church generally, recognized a small number of well-defined and widely occurring gifts along with an indefinite number of other less-defined gifts, some of which may not have been manifest everywhere and some of which may have overlapped with others.” Douglas J. Moo, The Letter to the Romans, ed. Ned B. Stonehouse et al., Second Edition., The New International Commentary on the New Testament (Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2018), 783.)
So, these gifts are not exhaustively listed, dogmatically defined, personally identified, guaranteed
God was working in the church in that day, and as a result, people were doing these things. So here, Paul is giving them some things to think about in relation to these gifts that they are involved in.
Prophecy - communicator of direct revelation. It should be in comparable/in direct ratio/equal to THE faith.
Galatians 1:23 “They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.””
1 Timothy 4:1 “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,”
1 Timothy 4:6 “If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.”
1 Timothy 6:21 “for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.”
Ephesians 4:5 “one Lord, one faith, one baptism,”
Service - same word as deacon, official or unofficial, aiding. Where? In serving others.
Teaching - instructing, help others know and understand truth.
Exhortation - to call to action, to urge a response
Contributes - share, give. Simplicity - no string attached.
Leading - rule, direct, in charge, head, guide. Zeal - eager, diligent
Acts of mercy - showing compassion. Cheerfulness - gladness
These are some example areas of specific application. Have a correct, body-membership perspective in your particular involvement.
So, we have admonition (v. 3), illustration (vv. 4-5), and application (vv. 6-8).
The admonition here is to be an active member of the body (in whatever areas of service God gives you using whatever abilities God has give you)… and, to think correctly about it.

Thoughtful, Gifted Involvement

Benediction: Romans 16:25–27 “Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.”
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1–31
